Maycember is Here
Parents, nobody warned us May deserves its own survival plan.
I used to think December was the busiest month of the year. Now I have kids… and May would like a word.
Somewhere between the end-of-year countdowns, spirit days, performances, and “don’t forget to send in…” emails, May quietly turns into its own version of chaos.
Just in our house alone, we have six separate performances to show up for. Piano recitals. End-of-year programs. Dance recitals. School events. And that’s before you add in Mother’s Day, Muffins with Mom, teacher gifts, and all the little extras that are definitely not optional.
It’s a lot.
And even though it is A LOT, the truth is… I love it.
I love seeing them on stage, a little nervous but proud. I love watching the thing they’ve been practicing finally come together. I love being invited into their school world, even if it means rearranging everything else to get there.
All of these special little moments? I wouldn’t miss them for the world.
But also… I’m tired.
This month definitely requires the same level of planning as December. Maybe even more. Because at least in December, you know it’s coming.
May seemed to sneak up on me. Probably because I have young kids and I wasn’t fully prepared for the busyness of the month.
One minute it’s a normal week, and the next you’re checking three calendars, ordering last-minute gifts, figuring out outfits, and trying to remember what day you’re supposed to be where (and at what time).
It’s the kind of busy that isn’t loud or dramatic.
It just stacks. Quietly. Constantly. All at once.
Maybe next year I’ll treat May the way I treat December. Plan ahead. Block the calendar early. Get ahead of the little things before they turn into big ones.
But for now… we’re in it.
Showing up. Cheering loudly. Grabbing snacks in the car between the recital and the school thing and the other school thing.
And honestly? That image, all of us a little rumpled, running five minutes late, snacks in hand, might be the most “us” this family has ever looked.

I was writing up our lesson plan for May and realized that EVERY SINGLE WEEK has a holiday or celebration of some kind. May is the busiest month of the year, and I had no idea until April 30th.
Phew! Glad it’s not just me. May’s a beautiful time of year and a hidden whirlwind of a month.
